I’ve heard the same verse quoted...Completely agree. I’ve heard the same verse quoted and had the same reaction.

Another response I’ve heard (though I can’t remember where I heard or saw it, I feel like it was either Grudem or CS Lewis), was that all of the things we admire in and love about our friends or family now, be they charity, humor, compassion, creativity, etc., are all part of the imago dei and a reflection of God’s character. No one ever says, “Man, I love how often you lie, cheat and steal. I find it so encouraging how you beat on your wife on a regular basis and abuse your kids.” After spending time in a state of separation from God, those qualities that we enjoy may cease to exist in the person so that all is left is the sinful rebellion, rage, hatred and selfishness that will consume them. We will not think “I miss my friend Andrew and I wish he were here” because we’ll recognize that everything we loved in Andrew is no longer present; that there is nothing left in him worth missing. If we were to cross over and visit that person we would be repulsed by what they had become, just like a piece of fruit that has been left out to rot. At one time it was beautiful and tasty and something we’d gladly sink our teeth into, but after a few weeks in the sun or at the bottom of a dumpster it becomes, smelly, rotten and ugly; something we wouldn’t touch even if it was sitting on a $20 bill.

This too will be a prompt for worship, not because “those horrible people are getting what they deserve” but because we’ll recognize that we could have shared their fate though in God’s grace we have inherited something more.
Revynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04594976611816085816noreply@blogger.com
